Meaning of My Name

Since my growing up years, I have had many strange experiences with my Name like with the way people perceive it, spell it and pronounce it.

I can recall almost all of them like Lovekeshna, Lokeshana,Lokeshahna, Kokeshna, Locationa, Lokeshnna..

In My grade 6th report card my name is printed as "Lovekeshna". My class teacher then, used to call me Lovekeshna and I never realized that I should ask her for a correction. The funny part is that this self interpretation of my name lands me to never pass grade 6th with name Lokeshna.

To add onto this melancholy rather a dramatic mockery, whenever I’m asked to introduce myself, the other thought that creeps into my mind is "How the other person is going to invent it this time?".

The most hilarious experience I have had when someone said “Lokesh Nath”.. I was smiling and at the back of my mind I said “yeh nath kahan se aa gaye..”. How ironic was that?

My younger sister till now teases me when she saw my name being spelled as “Kokeshna”. It wasn’t a deliberate attempt to write k inplace of L but may be the person heard it this way.

On the top of that if someone compliments you.. “wow such a unique name , what does it mean?” . Rather than correcting them I should answer them that “Even my parents are not aware of this new name then whom should I approach to tell you the meaning of my name.” sounds sarcastic because there is nothing ecstatic about it.

Irony I can’t run away with is and will always remain with me… My school mates either used to call me the sister or the girl-friend of any XYZ guy with the name "Lokesh". Oops I never had any feelings of sisterhood or a beloved for them because of this very reason. Sorry to all Lokesh I met in my life.. :)

But I should not deviate from my topic here.

Let me share the meaning of my Name so that I can defend all those claims that it’s nothing but “Na” added to “Lokesh”.

As a kid I was not even bothered if someone misspelled it. But then I was curious to know the meaning of my name. So I asked my dad.. “What does it actually mean? “ and shared the notion people have about my name.

He said, If you dissect your name into two i.e. “Lok” + “eshna
The “eshna” means the human desire and “Lok” means the world.

Indian philosophy and the spiritual traditions have classified human desires into three groups:

  1. Putreshna means the desire for progeny or to have a son(Putr in Hindi)
  2. Vitteshna means the need for security, social, financial, etc. or wealth(Vitt in Hindi)
  3. Lokeshna means the need for recognition, Name & fame or desire to be respected by others or the craving for and hankering after fame or popularity in people.

So “LokeshnameansSomeone who has the name in the world”.
Whereas if we try to figure out the meaning of Lokesh it means Lord(“esh” in Hindi) of The World (“lok” in Hindi).

See such a beautiful name.

I’m glad, my parents gave me such a unique name and I owe this blog to them. Dedicated to all those people who inspired rather gave me wonderful reason to write this blog. :)
